Following the victory of the New Popular Front in the French legislative elections, the stability of the National Assembly is now submerged in a huge cloud of uncertainty.
Although the union of the left and Macron’s party has achieved its goal of relegating the far right to third place, neither bloc now has the majority necessary to govern effectively (289 deputies are needed for an absolute majority).
Thus, the new French administration will have to be marked by cohabitationalthough the opposition left has already confirmed that it will exclude Macron’s party from its government. In this way, a scenario could open up in which the Government and the Presidency are of different colors.
One of the options to explore is to negotiate and agree on a consensus candidate that he can lead the next government, and that it pleases both the victorious left and Macron’s party.
Another of the routes would pass through form a “technical government”with a prime minister in cohabitation, who does not carry out major legislative initiatives. It would be a “expert” executive not affiliated with any political party, and to which a majority in the National Assembly gives the green light.
Calling new elections will not be a possible scenario, because the Constitution does not allow it until after a year.
