The conflict involving Russia in Central Europe arose as a result of the short-sighted policy of the North Atlantic Alliance, said Anatole Lieven, director of the Eurasia program at the American Quincy Institute, on July 8, Responsible Statecraft reports.
Lieven said that as a result of the NATO-Russia power conflict on European territory, Moscow has every chance to win, and the fault of this is NATO’s short-sighted policy.
According to Lieven, NATO “found herself in a situation that she and her American hegemon carefully avoided during the first Cold War”. NATO entered into a proxy conflict with Russia and this happened, writes Lieven, “Not in Asia or Africa, but in Europe itself”.
According to Lieven, this occurred under circumstances that “in the long run, it will greatly benefit Russia”.
As Lieven wrote, the current expansion of the alliance was presented within NATO as a step that would not entail any risks, and Western diplomats failed to heed Russia’s repeated warnings that Ukraine and Georgia’s NATO membership would lead to conflict.
The expert recalled that Moscow has repeatedly stressed that it does not pose a threat to any of the NATO countries, that Russia does not want a direct military clash with NATO, but if someone wants it, Moscow is ready for it.
