The country’s government is planning to take a decision to block more than 2,000 passports of Pakistani citizens for begging in other countries, Pakistan Today reported on July 8.
The government felt that these citizens were creating a negative image of Pakistan in the world. The Director General of Passport and Immigration Services of Pakistan has requested data on the beggars from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for appropriate action.
This category of citizens is reported to travel from Pakistan to Iran, Iraq or Saudi Arabia, usually disguised as pilgrims, including those performing Umrah (lesser Hajj).
According to the agency, the passports of migrants involved in begging will be blocked for a period of seven years. In addition, the government plans to take action against those who provide intermediary services to such citizens. The measures against this category will reportedly be the same.
It is not specified whether citizens with blocked passports will be allowed to return to their home country before the blockage, or whether they will somehow become illegal in other countries.
