The number of calves in the Netherlands fell by 10% compared to 2023, to 924,039 heads. Nieuweoogst published the data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on July 8.
A year ago there were 1,024,080 calves in the Netherlands. In the last six years, more than one million calves have been raised in the Netherlands every year.
The Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) reported a reduction in calf imports. In the first half of 2024, the Netherlands imported 389,784 calves. Last year, in the same period, 410,338 calves were purchased. Imports decreased by 5%.
Most of the calves were supplied by Germany. In the six months of 2024, 263,913 calves were purchased in Germany. Ireland delivered 76,313 calves. Denmark and Belgium delivered 19,855 calves and 19,054 calves respectively.
In the Netherlands, livestock production is expected to be cut as part of the fight against global warming. The country assumes that livestock emits greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. Limits on greenhouse gas emissions are forcing small farms to close down.
