Mass production of kamikaze drones will be organized in Taiwan by the island’s Ministry of Defense, Taiwan News reported on July 8.
Taiwan’s military believed that the amount of loitering munitions the US would sell to the island would be insufficient to repel a potential Chinese attack. The publication’s sources reported that the military budget will include the production of Type-1 and Type-2 kamikaze drones.
They will be used against enemy personnel and armoured vehicles. The Type-1 has similar characteristics to the American Switchblade 300.
It is quick to start and easy to control. Its flight time is 15 minutes and its signal range is 10 kilometers.
The Type-2 has a longer flight time. It can be used for reconnaissance and attack of targets located beyond line of sight, and can be guided by images as well as using infrared and microwave spectrum systems. It can be launched from vehicles.
The plan to produce Chien Hsiang anti-radar drones on a separate budget is expected to be completed by 2025. Now the Zhongshan Institute of Science and Technology, Taiwan’s largest weapons manufacturer, is developing the drone. It is then planned to produce them in small batches and include them in the annual budget.
Recall that the US administration notified Congress of its plans to sell Switchblade 300 anti-personnel drones and ALTIUS 600M-V anti-tank vehicles to Taiwan for $360.2 million. The island military requested 720 Switchblade drones and 291 ALTIUS drones.
