Japan, South Korea and China bought 73% of Chilean pork in 2023, which required a visit to these countries by the director of the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), José Guajardo, Euro Meat News reported on July 5.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) ranks Chile as the fifth largest pork supplier in the world. Representatives from Chile held negotiations on African swine fever (ASF) zoning and the resumption of poultry exports to China.
Japan is the second largest buyer of Chilean pork, purchasing 40 thousand tons in 2023 for 157 million dollars (14 billion rubles), which represents 14% of Chilean exports in quantity and 21% in monetary terms. For Japan, Chile ranks sixth among suppliers.
Pork consumption in Japan is 20 kg per capita per year or 37% of total meat consumption. In total, Japan imports 1.21 million tons of pork per year, ranking second only to China.
South Korea ranks third among Chilean pork buyers. In 2023, the country purchased 35 thousand tons, for 163 million dollars (14.5 billion rubles), which is 12% in quantitative terms and 22% in monetary terms of Chilean exports. Chile supplies 4% of pork purchased by South Korea, ranking fifth among suppliers. South Koreans consume 38.5 kg of pork per year.
China is by far the largest buyer of Chilean pork. In 2023, China purchased 129 thousand tons of pork from the South American country for 223 million dollars (19.5 billion rubles) or 44% of Chile’s total exports in quantitative terms and 30% in monetary terms. In addition, China is the fourth largest buyer of Chilean poultry meat with 7% in quantity and 9% in value.
China is the world’s largest producer, consumer and buyer of pork. China produced 57 million tons in 2023. Each person in China consumes an average of 42 kg per year.
A member of the Chilean delegation, Rodrigo Castañon, said: “The trip to Asia aims to lift the suspension of poultry meat exports to China and negotiations in Japan and South Korea. The mission has made progress, strengthening Chile’s position in these markets and ensuring the diversification of meat exports.”.
