Maputo Railway Terminal Triples Capacity to 75,000 Passengers Per Day

The passenger train terminal at the central station in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, has tripled its capacity to transport people from 25,000 to 75,000 a day, Mozambique’s president said on Monday.

“We welcome the decision to expand the passenger terminal, as it allows us to increase capacity from 25,000 passengers to 75,000 per day, tripling the current capacity,” said Filipe Nyusi during the opening of the now expanded terminal.

Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) has doubled the capacity of the Ressano-Garcia railway line connecting the country with neighbouring South Africa and expanded the passenger rail terminal at Maputo Central Station.

Filipe Nyusi said at the opening ceremony that the infrastructure renovation cost approximately $90 million (€83 million), expressing pride in the fact that the process was financed with CFM’s own funds.

The President hopes that increasing the capacity of the Ressano-Garcia railway line will reduce congestion on National Road No. 4, particularly when transporting ore from South Africa for transport through the port of Maputo.

“The Ressano Line also gains importance due to its connection with South Africa, a country that plays an important role in Mozambique’s foreign trade, ranking third as a destination for our exports and first as a source of our imports,” Nyusi emphasized, referring to trade and economic relations with the neighboring country.

According to figures provided by the President of Mozambique, CFM has invested more than $600 million (€554 million) over the past five years in infrastructure, equipment and human resources, including two projects reopened today.

“This is a clear sign of the ability to generate cash flow through its recurring operations, which are self-financing,” said Filipe Nyusi, inviting local businessmen to partner with a company “whose financial position has been consistently strong and consistent.”
