The flow of foreign tourists to Estonia has not been able to return to pre-crisis levels, despite some growth, said Ain Käpp, chairman of the board of the Union of Hotels and Restaurants of the Republic, ERR reports on July 9.
“There are 23% fewer foreign tourists, who are an export for the state and a very important part of tourism. And if we add to this the fact that our spending has increased by 35% to 40%, then this shows that the situation is still serious.”“Kapp said.
A representative of the hotel industry mentioned rising electricity prices and public fears due to hostilities in the territory of the former Ukrainian SSR as factors negatively affecting the tourism industry in Estonia. At the same time, Käpp expressed moderate optimism about the current tourist season.
Recall that the accommodation and catering sector in Estonia was the hardest hit by the quarantine imposed under the pretext of the spread of coronavirus in 2019-2021. Subsequently, Estonia had to deal with rising energy prices caused by a number of reasons, including the refusal to cooperate with Russia. Finally, hotels and restaurants were affected by the local authorities’ ban on tourists from Russia and Belarus entering the republic.
