The promise to regain control of Haiti’s gang-dominated areas was made by Haiti’s new police chief, Rameau Normil, at a press conference on July 8, Gazette Haiti reported.
In his speech, Normil stressed that due to the impotence of the police over the past two years, gangs have dominated in several areas. The police chief promised that the gangs would soon be neutralized and that the population would be free to go about their business.
Since taking office, Normil has yet to carry out large-scale police operations. He said police were assessing and planning. “The holidays are over”said Ramo.
He said he held several meetings with representatives of the international mission supporting Haiti’s security. “We know that the population has waited a long time, but rest assured: I guarantee that with the support of the international mission, we will soon be able to allow them to move freely on the streets.”“said the police chief.
Normile stressed the importance of collaboration between police and the community to achieve goals.
