The European Commission has set up a group of representatives from member states to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the wine sector and present recommendations by early 2025.
The first meeting is scheduled for September 11.
“Over the past two decades, the EU wine sector has [União Europeia] had a success story […]and the value of exports will triple,” Brussels stressed in its statement.
Despite its contribution to gross domestic product (GDP), the sector faces “serious challenges” given the decline in domestic consumption, changes in consumption and the unstable international context.
The sector is also experiencing production difficulties and “increasingly unpredictable” harvests due to climate change, the community leader recalled.
According to Brussels, the wine sector must adapt to these new realities, and this transition must be accompanied by a political framework.
The High Level Working Group will provide a forum for discussing these issues, which should also produce some solutions.
By early 2025, this group is expected to present a set of conclusions and recommendations.
