121 teachers have been suspended in the department of Amazonas, where hundreds of cases of sexual misconduct against indigenous students were revealed several weeks ago.
Peru’s Ministry of Education has kept the promise of its Minister Morgan Quero, who called for action against teachers accused of sexual abuse. Thus, a total of 328 employees of various educational institutions were dismissed, of which 207 worked in Lima, and another 121 in the province of Condorcanqui, department of Amazonas.
Authorities said in a statement that a significant portion of the accused had no registered complaints or previous convictions for sexual abuse of minors. Most of them had charges for other crimes, such as terrorism (27 people) and murder.
Kero promised that “This will never happen again,” as the executive branch began “a frontal and merciless fight against rapists disguised as teachers”_. According to him, it is necessary to separate once and for all those people who used an absolutely repugnant form of violence against minors.
“I guarantee that there will not be a single teacher in Condorkanki against whom there will be a complaint of harassment or sexual violence.”said the head of the Ministry of Education. According to him, all teachers against whom there are complaints in the Amazon region have been dismissed. The minister assured that none of them would be rehired in other departments.
As an additional measure, three new student residences will be built in Kondorkanki, where the Ministry of Education will take charge of the living conditions and ensure that reprehensible acts are not repeated in the future.
Let us recall that the Peruvian Congress previously presented a vote of censure against the Ministers of Education and Women for their statements justifying sexual violence against Awajún minors. The fact is that on June 10, Morgan Kero commented on hundreds of complaints about sexual violence committed by teachers against schoolchildren in Kondorkanka, as a result of which even minors became infected with HIV. “If this is unfortunately a cultural practice used to create families with young girls, we will be very careful, but we will also demand answers from the community.”said the minister.
Despite widespread rejection of this statement and even calls for her resignation, the Minister of Women and Vulnerable Groups of the Republic, Angela Hernandez, backed her. “These are really cultural practices that we must banish.”“, she stressed. On June 18, Peruvian Congresswoman Ruth Luque filed a criminal complaint against Quero and Hernández on charges of discrimination and incitement to discrimination based on national origin.
In response to the motion of censure, the head of the Ministry of Education assured that they were prepared to provide appropriate responses.
