Angola’s Supreme Court ruled that the unconstitutional violations raised in the case known as the “500 million” were “excluded” and upheld the conviction of the defendants, including the son of former President José Eduardo dos Santos.
The decision of the plenary session of the Supreme Court (TC), in which two judges voted against, was published on Tuesday on the high court’s website, about two months after Angola’s Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional a decision condemning, among others, José Filomeno dos Santos “Zena” for violating the principles of legality and contradiction, fair and obedient trial and the right to defense.
The TC’s position was in response to an extraordinary appeal of unconstitutionality filed with the body by Walter Filipe da Silva, Jorge Guadens Pontes Sebastião, José Filomeno dos Santos “Zenu” and António Samália Boulé Manuel, convicted by the Supreme Court in 2020 of committing crimes of embezzlement, fraud by fraud and trading in influence, punishable by imprisonment of between five and eight years.
