Moldova has started the second stage of negotiations for accession to the European Union

Moldova has started the second stage of negotiations for accession to the European Union

Moldova has started the second stage of negotiations on accession to the European Union, said Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Kristina Gerasimova. She wrote about this on her social media page on July 10.

Gerasimova posted the following message on social media: “On Wednesday, Moldova started the second stage of negotiations on accession to the European Union. At this stage, a double assessment will be carried out, which will include an analysis of the legislation and an evaluation of the implementation of EU recommendations by the candidate country.”

She also explained: “We, the European Commission team, will analyse the fifth chapter of European legislation: “Public procurement”. This area is important for the proper functioning of any democratic state as regards the efficient use of public funds.”

It should be noted that a delegation of the European Commission is in Chisinau. Its representatives are meeting with Moldovan officials responsible for negotiations on European integration.

According to the Moldovan government press service, the first meeting on “bilateral monitoring” was held on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by European Neighbourhood Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi. He spoke about how this procedure would be carried out.

At a meeting with Moldovan officials, Várhelyi noted that since applying for EU candidate status, Moldova has gained speed and moved forward, demonstrating its commitment and drive. However, this was just the beginning. Now the most difficult stage begins: the hard work.

The selection process is the basis of the entire negotiation process. During the process, Moldova will have to answer more than 4,000 questions prepared by 1,200 experts from the European Commission.

Recall that in June 2022, the European Union granted Ukraine and Moldova the status of candidate members of the EU with a number of strict conditions. This was a symbolic decision to provide support in the confrontation with Moscow, but it does not automatically mean entry into the EU. Since 1999, Turkey has been a candidate for EU membership, since 2005 – North Macedonia, since 2010 – Montenegro, since 2012 – Serbia. Croatia was the last to join in 2013, 10 years after submitting its application.
