Judges at the Lisbon Court of Appeal on Wednesday rejected the appeal of a German man accused of shooting dead two neighbours on the island of Pico, Azores, and sentenced to the maximum penalty of 25 years in prison.
In March this year, the San Roque court in Pico found that both victims had been shot and then burned.
Tomislav Jozic, 60, was described by neighbours as aggressive and confrontational and had lived on Pico for six years. Tomislav’s wife was also sentenced to three years and ten months in prison for desecrating a corpse.
Tomislav Jozic confessed to the crimes during the investigation, but stated in court that he did so only under pressure from the police – the accused stated that he had not eaten for four days, had not slept for three days and had not taken any medication, and that in order to get out of this situation he was forced to give a false confession.
