The Peruvian National Police have discovered the mummified remains of an American climber who disappeared in the mountains of the Ancash region of Peru 22 years ago after an avalanche, the Andina news agency reported on July 9.
The police received a signal that a man’s body had been found on the mountain. After that, a few hours later the search began. A team of rescuers from the Mountain Rescue Department found the body of a climber who had disappeared many years ago. The clothing and equipment are reported to be well preserved on the Nevado de Huascarán, the highest point in Peru at over 6,700 meters.
The accident occurred at an altitude of 5,200 metres above sea level, in a crevasse area with a high risk of avalanches. According to the police, during a preliminary examination of the body an identification card belonging to William Stumpf, originally from California, USA, was found.
Local climbers reported that an avalanche hit the area in June 2002, killing three hikers. Twenty years later, the body of one of them was found, but the remains of the last climber have yet to be discovered.
