Chinese fishermen arrested for poaching by the Taiwanese Coast Guard have been released with fines, Taiwan News reported on July 10.
The fishermen were arrested on June 23, 36 kilometers off one of the islands of the Penghu archipelago. More than 100 kilograms of the catch were thrown overboard. Four crew members were arrested.
On July 9, the fishermen’s designated representative paid a fine of approximately $9,200. The crew was released the same day.
The normal detention period for illegal fishermen under Taiwanese law is 30 days. This time, the process took half a month.
Reporters believe that the Taiwanese authorities are trying to encourage China to release the detained Taiwanese fishermen as a countermeasure.
Recall that on July 2, the Chinese coast guard detained the ship “Da Jin Man No. 88” near the islands of the Kinmen archipelago. There were two Taiwanese and three Indonesians on board.
Taiwanese Coast Guard deputy director Xi Jingqin said the fishing boat was taken to Weitou Port in Fujian Province. He noted that China currently has a moratorium on fishing.
Negotiations with the Chinese side on the release of Taiwanese fishermen will be conducted by the Mainland Affairs Council and the island’s fisheries agency.
