Mozambican authorities have repatriated two people “of Portuguese origin” to South Africa after they were detained in the Gaza Strip in southern Mozambique with “expired documents,” a Mozambique provincial spokesman told Lusa on Thursday.
“They are a couple of Portuguese origin but have acquired South African citizenship. They initially said they did not have a passport, but after checking, one of them had an expired passport,” said Abeldo Nhanombe (Senami), a spokesman for the National Migration Service in Gaza province.
The couple were detained on Tuesday at the Inkoluane checkpoint in Bilene district and repatriated to South Africa on Wednesday afternoon after they presented South African passports.
“One of them was legitimate. His passport was duly stamped and within the prescribed time (…) they were both repatriated because they were in the same vehicle and heading in the same direction,” the spokesman said.
