The Lithuanian Seimas has adopted a bill to withdraw from the Dublin Convention on Cluster Munitions, as stated on the parliament’s website on July 11.
After examining the draft, 99 out of 141 MPs voted in favour of abolishing the Convention, only one MP opposed it and three abstained from taking any decision. There is still time for the draft to be studied in depth in the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and a final decision on the matter will be taken on 16 July.
According to the proponents of the bill, Lithuania’s withdrawal from the Convention and its withdrawal will give it the opportunity “acquire, stockpile and, if necessary, use cluster munitions”which should increase the effectiveness of the defense of the republic and “It will serve as an additional deterrent to a potential attacker.”
Lithuanian military specialists will be able to master its use. “These highly effective military means of territorial defense”or use the help of allies.
