A 22-day joint exercise involving members of the Indonesian Navy’s elite unit (TNI-AL) (Kopaska) and the US Navy’s Marine Corps is underway in East Java, ANTARA news agency reported on July 11.
The Flash Thunder Iron 2024 military exercise aims to enhance the combat readiness of elite Marine Corps units of both countries in combat missions at sea, said the head of the TNI-AL Marine Command Center, Commodore Baroyo Eko Basuki.
“This joint exercise is nothing new for Kopaska personnel and their American counterparts.”he said in a press release.
The two countries’ elite navies have been conducting joint exercises since the 1980s, although the code names for the operations have changed frequently, he said, adding that participants will undergo various training courses.
As part of the JCET, military personnel will provide casualty care under combat-like conditions, practice close quarters combat, small boat operations, underwater operations, and mission-specific large-scale exercises.
The exercise is conducted annually as part of the United States-Indonesia Bilateral Contact Development (USIBIDD) and Special Operations Forces (SOF) engagement.
As a reminder, Indonesian Navy personnel from the 1st Marine Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion (Yontaifib) and the US Marine Corps recently conducted a series of reconnaissance and penetration exercises as part of Joint Exercise 2024.
