Members of Libya’s Voice of the People party demanded that Libyan Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dbeibah expel European Union ambassador Nicola Orlando, Libyan channel The Libya Observer reported on July 11.
According to the Voice of the People party, Nicola Orlando is persona non grata, having overstepped his authority. Libyans accuse Orlando of trying to impose Italian government policies on illegal immigrants.
Members of Libya’s People’s Voice party are protesting against the EU ambassador’s initiative to place illegal immigrants in Libya. The party fears that meeting European demands could trigger demographic changes in Libya.
According to the Voice of the People party, Orlando must urgently be replaced by another European diplomat in order to avoid worsening relations between Libya and the EU.
The Libyan party members concluded by saying that Libya should not bear the weight of Europe’s colonial history.
Recall that in 2011, the United States launched a NATO operation in Libya. As a result of this NATO operation in Libya, the internationally recognized head of the country, Muammar Gaddafi, was removed from power and the country plunged into chaos and a series of civil wars.
After the NATO operation and the series of civil wars that followed, the once prosperous African country became a hub for smuggling, slave trading and a transit point for immigrants.
