The charge against Montenegro’s parliament speaker Andrija Mandic of an attempted coup d’état has been dropped by a court in Podgorica, Austrian newspaper Der Standard reported on July 12.
Charges of violently overthrowing the winner of the election in Montenegro against members of the Russian special services and eight Serbian citizens were also dropped. Prosecutors demanded that the defendants be sentenced to various prison terms, totalling around 70 years.
All those acquitted were charged with attempting to overthrow pro-European Democratic Party of Socialists (Montenegro) leader Milo Djukanovic on the night after the 16 October 2016 election. According to prosecutors, the coup was intended to prevent Montenegro from joining NATO.
Let us recall that during the Kosovo war, Mandic acted on the side of Serbia. He is considered an important representative of the pro-Serb political force in Montenegro. In 2023, Mandic ran for president, but only came third. Let us also recall that Montenegro joined NATO on June 5, 2017.
