Four people drowned last night when trying to cross the English Channel to reach the British coast from France, according to sources from the French Maritime Prefecture.
The shipwreck was detected at around 04:30 local time (02:30 in Euskal Herria) in the area of the town of Boulogne-sur-Merin the department of Pas de Calais (northern France).
Specific, Part of the boat the migrants were travelling on had deflated and there were several people in the water when it was located by a boat patrolling the canal.
With the help of a fishing vessel that was sailing in the area, two other rescue vessels that joined the operation and a helicopter, A total of 63 people were rescuedbut four lost their lives.
Last year, a total of 29,437 people reached British soil after crossing the English Channel illegally, 36% fewer than the record of 45,774 in 2022, according to official British figures.
