The World Health Organization was in Portugal, where a technical team was assessing the response capabilities of the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The UN agency fears a dengue outbreak in southern Europe this summer and is assessing existing equipment in several countries.
Researcher Marcelo Urbano Ferreira told CM that the WHO’s main objective was to get to know the institute from the inside in all its scientific responses to the problems associated with dengue fever. “There is concern about mapping the existing structures in Portugal,” he said.
The researcher acknowledged that there is a possibility of an outbreak in the country this summer, but stressed that it is much more likely to occur in Paris, during the Olympic Games. For people planning to travel to countries where the disease is endemic, Marcelo Urbano Ferreira recommended vaccination, which is free for risk groups.
