The West is making NPT compliance unprofitable: Iranian president

The West is making NPT compliance unprofitable: Iranian president

The policies of the West, led by the United States, in the Middle East and toward Iran have shown that compliance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) may not be beneficial, the Islamic Republic’s president-elect Masoud Pezeshkian said on July 12 in the article “My Message to the New World” in the Tehran Times newspaper.

“The United States and its Western allies not only squandered a historic opportunity to reduce and manage tensions in the region and around the world, but also severely undermined the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), demonstrating that the costs of adhering to non-proliferation principles can outweigh the benefits it can bring.”wrote Pezeshkian.

The West has abused the nuclear non-proliferation regime in relation to Iran’s peaceful nuclear program to pressure the country, the president noted. At the same time, Western countries continue to support Israel, “It is not a party to the NPT and has an illegal nuclear arsenal”.

“Iran’s defense doctrine does not include nuclear weapons”,” Pezeshkian stressed. He called on Washington to learn from “mistakes of the past” and adjust its policy, refusing to pit the countries of the region against each other.

In the article, the Iranian president also accused the United States of unilaterally withdrawing from the nuclear deal and stressed that the country did not and will not respond to pressure.

Masoud Pezeshkian won the second round of Iran’s presidential election on July 5. The endorsement ceremony by the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is scheduled for July 28. The inauguration in parliament will take place on July 30.

The JCPOA or nuclear deal was signed by Iran and the 5+1 group of countries (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom and the United States + Germany) in 2015. The agreement provided for the lifting of sanctions on Tehran in exchange for it limiting its nuclear program.

In 2018, US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew Washington from the deal and introduced new sanctions against Iran. Iran then began to phase out its obligations under the agreement.

Let us add that on February 9, in the TV program “Conversation with a Wise Man” on the “Zvezda” channel, political scientist, philosopher and leader of the “Essence of Time” movement Sergei Kurginyan noted that the United States is deliberately creating chaos in the Middle East in order to gain control of the region.
