Economic problems have piled up for organic farmers in Germany: stagnant income and profits, high subsidies and reduced investment are the new norm, German news portal Agrarheute reported on July 12.
At the same time, for ordinary farmers, 2022/23 became the most economically successful year in history. Last year, traditional farmers earned sales revenues of 4,979 euros (475,000 rubles) per hectare. This is an increase of 18.4% compared to the very good previous year and is the highest ever recorded.
And organic farmers have had to fight hard to survive, industry analysts say. Until recently, the reality was completely different: more and more farmers were switching to organic, the area of land devoted to “organic” products was growing, there was an increase in profits and stable incomes. According to experts, this is over for now.
The enormous economic challenges of organic farming under difficult economic conditions have already become apparent in the 2021/22 campaign. The sharp rise in food prices and the equally sharp drop in consumer income have completely changed the market.
This situation was observed in the 2022/23 financial year. Despite the increase in prices for organic products, sales revenue remained at the level of the previous two years: 2,623 euros (250,000 rubles) per hectare.
