The Gaza Civil Defense said the area was destroyed, with 85 percent of buildings rendered uninhabitable. Several infrastructure sites were destroyed. Israeli forces said they had dismantled eight tunnels and killed dozens of Hamas members.
Weapons, laptops and communications equipment were found in the tunnels, as well as equipment for a long stay in place, including gas and electricity supplies.
It was the third time Shujaiya had been the target of a ground incursion since the conflict began. In December, the army mistakenly killed three Israeli hostages when they came out with their hands raised and holding white flags to ask for help, thinking it was a trap.
The Shujaiya operation ended on the day Israel ordered the evacuation of the Gaza Strip, where troops have returned in recent days to fight Hamas. The Islamic Resistance Movement will try to retake the territories the army has given up.
