The reappointment of Ursula von der Leyen as head of the European Commission will be put to a vote by MEPs on 18 July at the inaugural session of the new European Parliament, which begins with the election of the assembly’s president.
At the end of June, the leaders of the 27 member states had already agreed to extend the German official’s mandate as president of Europe’s executive branch, which has faced a series of crises since 2019, from Covid to the war in Ukraine.
President von der Leyen, 65, now needs to get the green light from at least 361 of the 720 MEPs during a plenary session in Strasbourg from July 16 to 19. The result of the secret ballot is expected to be “close”, parliamentary sources told AFP.
