Young man rescues three girls from burning car in Melgaso. Two die in investigation that leaves four dead

It is reported that the young man lost control on a turn due to speeding on municipal road 202, as a result of which he collided with a tree and caused a fire.

The victims of the accident were identified as Claudio Silva, Gabriel Garella, Rita Afonso and Sara Servio. Gabriel was an army soldier living in Lisbon.

A young man, who was also in the cafe where the victims were, noticed the accident and pulled three young women out of the car, while another member of the public tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher.

Commentator CMTV and the commander of the Algeirão-Mem volunteer fire department, Martins, cited the driver’s inexperience, coupled with poor lighting and poor road surfaces, as factors that could have contributed to the accident. “I can’t even imagine the suffering, they are all young, a lot of young people, which makes the whole accident very difficult,” he said.

The accident occurred under circumstances that are still being investigated by authorities. The alarm was received at 01:17. There were 24 operatives at the scene.

The Melgaço municipality has already issued a statement expressing condolences to the families of the victims. “The Melgaço community shares the grief and sorrow of these families. The municipality pays tribute to the young people who left us so prematurely,” the statement reads.
