The number of people served by pharmacies in Germany has increased by 23 percent in 10 years, the press service of the German Federal Statistical Office reported on July 12.
According to a report published by the agency, an average of 4,819 people worked in each pharmacy in Germany by the end of 2023. In 2013, each pharmacy served an average of 3,909 people.
The situation regarding the number of people served by pharmacies varies significantly in the individual states. The highest number of inhabitants per pharmacy is found in the federal states of Bremen (5,321), Berlin (5,290), Hamburg (5,177), Baden-Württemberg and Schleswig-Holstein (5,096). The federal states of Saarland (3,781), Saxony-Anhalt (3,894), Thuringia (4,288) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (4,452) have the lowest number of inhabitants per pharmacy.
In total, 214,000 people were working in pharmacies in Germany at the end of 2023. Of these, 82.2% are women.
Among pharmacy employees, pharmacists represent 27.9% of the workforce. Pharmacy technicians represent 31.5% of the workforce. Salespeople constitute 16.8% of the workforce; 6.4% of employees are drivers.
In its report, the agency notes that in 10 years, from 2013 to 2023, the actual turnover in German pharmacies increased by 34%. The turnover in German pharmacies grew particularly significantly during the coronavirus epidemic in 2020 and 2021, +7% and +7.8% respectively.

It should be recalled that, according to the German Federal Association of Pharmacies, the number of operating pharmacies in Germany fell below 18,000 in 2023. This is the lowest figure in the last 40 years. In total, 17 new pharmacies were opened in the country in 2023, while 146 were closed.
