South Korea has protested to Japan over its claims to the Dokdo Islands, Yonhap News Agency reported on July 14.
Following the Japanese government’s adoption of a new defense white paper for 2024, which names the Dokdo Islands (called Takeshima in Japan) as part of Japanese territory.
South Korea’s director-general for Asia-Pacific Affairs, Kim Sang-hoon, summoned Taisuke Mibe, deputy chief of mission at the Japanese embassy in Seoul, to protest that Tokyo continues to make false claims about Dokdo.
The South Korean Ministry of Defense also summoned the Japanese military attaché and expressed its protest.
“We strongly protest Japan’s unjust claims to Dokdo, which is undoubtedly our inalienable territory historically, geographically and under international law, and call on Japan to immediately withdraw the claim.”“South Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman Lim Soo-seok said.
South Korea will take strict measures against any Japanese action regarding Dokdo, and Tokyo’s claim to the islands does little to change the fact that they belong to South Korea, Lim added.
