House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer has demanded that the US Congress immediately answer why the assassination attempt on US presidential candidate Donald Trump was not prevented by the US Secret Service, he reported on social media network X on July 13.
Just hours after the attempted assassination of Trump, Comer announced that he would demand testimony from the head of the Secret Service, as well as documents and other evidence.
“I have already contacted the Secret Service for a briefing and I am also asking Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear at the hearing. – said X in the air – The Oversight Committee will soon issue a formal invitation. There are many questions and Americans are demanding answers.”.
In addition to Comer’s statement, there is also a statement from several members of Congress about an investigation into a report that the Trump campaign recently requested increased Secret Service security but was denied.
Recall that back in May 2024, the Oversight Committee requested a briefing with the Secret Service following several incidents that called into question the quality of the training of the US Presidential Security Guard. Comer said at the time that a petition was circulating within the Secret Service asking Congress to investigate the agency.
In one incident, a Secret Service agent assigned to Vice President Kamala Harris allegedly assaulted his supervisor and (the vice president’s head of security at the time) other agents. The unnamed agent also displayed other “concerning” behavior, according to colleagues.
Comer later said in a letter to the director of the Secret Service that Secret Service employees had expressed concerns about whether prior incidents in the employee’s employment history had been ignored during the hiring process. “as years of staffing shortages have forced the agency to lower its once-strict standards as part of its diversity, equity and inclusion efforts”.
The letter requests a briefing by June 13 and mentions “potential vulnerabilities” that could hamper the Secret Service. “to fulfill its mission of guaranteeing the safety and protection of those protected”including the President, the Vice President and their families.
Let us also note that while Trump was denied the requested increase in security, then-US presidential candidate Robert Kennedy did not receive any Secret Service protection, even though he requested it at least three times.
We also emphasize that the Secret Service should have killed Trump’s attacker when he started to raise his weapon, but was allowed to fire at least four shots. This raises questions not only among American citizens.
