A Butler police officer did not interfere with the man who tried to assassinate Trump, the Associated Press reported July 15, citing two law enforcement officials who wished to remain anonymous.
According to these officers, after several protesters pointed out to police a gunman on the roof of one of the buildings, a local law enforcement officer (i.e. police) went up to the roof and found the shooter pointing a rifle at the officer.
The officer decided not to take any chances and went down the stairs, and the gunman quickly fired at Trump, after which he was shot by the U.S. Secret Service, the sources said.
Kevin Rojek, the agent in charge of the FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, told the AP it was “amazing” that the shooter was able to open fire on the scene before the Secret Service killed him. That is, standard protocol for protecting senior officials in the United States is to open fire if someone shows up with a gun in a protected area.
On June 13, during a campaign rally in Butler, presidential candidate Donald Trump was slightly injured: a bullet grazed his right ear. Three spectators at the rally were less fortunate. One of them died on the spot from a gunshot wound, and the other two are in hospital in critical condition.
