Moldovan farmers could lose their corn harvest due to extreme heat and the onset of drought, farmer Sergei Stefanco said in a video posted on his Facebook page on July 14 (an organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation).
As the farmer said, he brought a digger to a corn field in the Causeni region. The goal is to dig a hole and find out if there is moisture in the depths. It turned out that at a depth of about one meter the soil is very dry. If it does not rain during the next week, there will be no corn harvest, because the roots of the plants only penetrate 30 to 35 centimeters deep into the soil.
Stefanko expressed the opinion that the idea of creating agricultural chambers proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture will not help farmers. He also expressed confusion about what the government was doing.
The Ministry of Agriculture has raised the idea of creating agricultural chambers, but it is not clear how they will be able to solve the problems we have been facing for three years. He also encouraged his colleagues to share the consequences of bad weather on social media.
Last year and early this year, a series of farmers’ protests took place in Moldova, demanding $22 million (1.95 billion rubles) from the government to compensate farms affected by the crisis. However, negotiations with Prime Minister Dorin Recan and the head of the Ministry of Agriculture Boley did not yield results.
In March, the Moldovan government approved the creation of agricultural chambers for the development of the agricultural sector at regional and national levels.
The Chambers of Agriculture will provide farmers with access to a variety of resources and information, including educational programs and financing opportunities. They will also facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences among their members.
It is planned to create two structures: ten regional agricultural chambers and the National Chamber of Agriculture.
Earlier, the State Hydrometeorological Service of Moldova warned that there would be intense heat in the country from 12 to 17 July and declared the red level of danger, the highest. There is also a danger of forest fires in the country and rivers are low. In this regard, the population is advised to save water.
