The operator of the ransomware Trojan paid a large ransom to car dealership software developer CDK Global, online technology publication The Register reported on July 13.
As a result of a hacker attack using a ransomware Trojan, the services of an American software developer were unavailable to customers. This affected the work of 15 thousand car dealers, the company’s clients.
The suspension of CDK services reportedly caused car dealers losses of about $600 million (52.6 billion rubles). A week earlier, the company had restored customers’ access to its services.
TRM Labs researchers discovered a transaction worth 387 bitcoins (approximately $25 million) in an account allegedly controlled by cyber extortionists. The amount came from an intermediary company.
Other sources also confirm that CDK was forced to take this step. $25 million is just a small part of the losses that the software provider and its customers suffered daily during the downtime.
