Brazil’s grain production will reach 299.27 million tons in the 2023-24 harvest, according to a survey released by the National Supply Company (Conab), published on July 15 on the online agricultural news platform AgroPages.
This amount represents a decrease of 6.4% or 20.54 million tons compared to the previous cycle, but still positions this crop as the second largest in the country. A field study carried out at the end of June reported an increase in the yield of the main crops, indicating a recovery in production, especially of corn, sesame and second-crop rice.
On the other hand, there were declines in first-crop corn, beans, wheat, cotton and soybeans. According to the analysis, this decline is mainly due to the intensity of the El Niño phenomenon.
Production is estimated at 147.34 million tonnes, down 4.7% or 7.27 million tonnes from the previous crop. Corn production is estimated at 115.86 million tonnes, including all three crops, down 12.2% or 16.03 million tonnes from the 2022-23 crop.
At the same time, the total area sown in the country increased by 1.5%, 1.21 million hectares more than last season. The most significant increase was recorded in the area cultivated with soybeans: 1.94 million hectares.
The total area of corn fell to 1.41 million hectares, followed by wheat and other winter crops. Winter crops are currently being planted in Brazil: wheat, oats, rapeseed, rye, barley and triticale.
