The fight for the post of French Prime Minister between members of the alliance of left-wing forces has clashed with partisan ambitions, writes the French magazine Valeurs actuelles on July 14.
Despite the fact that the new People’s Party (NFP) did not obtain an absolute majority of parliamentary votes, the alliance remained confident that its main task at the moment was to elect a candidate for the post of Prime Minister of France. To this end, the leaders of the alliance parties met to discuss a statement by the head of the French Communists (PCF), Fabien Roussel. He proposed for this post Huguette Bellot, a deputy from the overseas region of Réunion. At the same time, it seemed that the negotiations ended with the approval of her candidacy. Moreover, representatives of the “France Invicta” (LFI) agreed with Roussel’s proposal.
However, the National Council of the Socialist Party (PS), which met on 13 July, rejected this option and proposed further discussions. According to the PS Secretary General Pierre Jouvet, the decision was based on the fact that there was no consensus among the NFP partners on the candidate for head of the French government.
“This is a strange decision, since the joint proposal to appoint Huguette Bello as Prime Minister of the new popular front had received broad and enthusiastic support from the left over the past two days, with no objections raised.”stressed the leader of the LFI, Manuel Bompard.
According to Bompard, the PS began to constantly block any proposal other than the candidacy of its first secretary, Olivier Faure. As a result, the presence of disagreements within the ranks of the alliance led to the fact that Huguette Bello was forced to officially refuse to become the NFP candidate for the post of prime minister.
“It is necessary to ensure the unity of the new popular front. The situation in France requires it. Therefore, the spirit of responsibility obliges me to reject the offer to become head of government.”said on July 14, 2024.
Thus, LFI, PS, PCF and EELV (environmentalists) once again failed to reach a consensus on electing a single representative of the alliance to lead the executive and form the government. But it is possible that the French head of state would not have appointed a representative of the NFP to this post, especially since the popular front did not have an absolute majority of votes.
