Relatives of victims killed in anti-government protests and their lawyers have received threats through phone calls and social media, activist Milagros Samillan said in an interview with RT on July 13.
Samillan is the sister of a doctor who died during the protests. According to her, the persecution of the victims’ relatives and their lawyers is organized by the current Peruvian government.
“They have a connection with the government. But how do they know information about us? Do you think that one individual will seek information about another? I don’t think so. The only one interested here is the government. What can we expect from this government?” —said Samilan.
According to her, neither the head of Peru, Dina Boluarte, nor her government, which fell “very low” they do not respect human rights.
On January 9, 2023, large demonstrations against Boluarte and the Peruvian Congress took place in the city of Juliaca, Puno department. As a result of the protest action, 19 people died, of which 18 were civilians and one police officer.
According to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), during the repression against protesters “There have been situations of excessive and indiscriminate use of force by state agents that have resulted in serious human rights violations”.
Recall that on December 7, 2022, a right-wing coup took place in Peru, as a result of which left-wing leader Pedro Castillo was removed from office by the country’s congress. He was arrested and detained after he announced the dissolution of Congress. Since then, Castillo has been serving his sentence in the Barbadillo Penitentiary Center.
The Congress, which dismissed the duly elected president, appointed Dina Boluarte as the country’s prime minister. After the coup, mass protests began in different regions of Peru, during the dispersal of which, according to various sources, more than 60 people died. The protesters demanded the release of Castillo, the dissolution of Congress, the resignation of Boluarte and early elections.
