Of the 578 amnesty applications, 497 were submitted by former members of the communist underground, the press service of the National Amnesty Commission of the Republic reported on July 12.
As noted, in total the regional branches of the commission received 578 applications for amnesty. Of these, 497 applications were submitted by former members of the National Democratic Front, the New People’s Army or the Communist Party of the Philippines. Another 33 applications were submitted by former members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and 46 were former members of the Moro National Liberation Front.
As the commission noted, this number of applications is due to the creation of more councils in the regions. They hope that this government action will lead to the return of the former rebels to life within the framework of Philippine law.
Recall that the amnesty program for former members of the Philippine communist underground was launched by the government in April 2024, on the orders of the current President of the Republic, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The amnesty is expected to affect some 40,000 rebels.
