Work on extending the Sul do Tejo metro to Costa de Caparica will begin in five to seven years.

The Minister of Infrastructure said this Monday that he hopes that work on extending the Sul do Tejo metro to Costa de Caparica and Trafaria in the municipality of Almada could begin within five to seven years.

“I would say that within five, six, seven years we could be thinking about working on the ground and acquiring rolling stock,” said Miguel Pinto Luz.

The government official spoke to the media at the end of the signing ceremony of the protocol for the development of the project for the extension of the metro to Costa da Caparica and Trafaria, passing through Santo António and São João, signed between the Almada Municipal Council in the Setúbal area, the Lisbon Metro and Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa (TML).

This new section, which will add approximately 6.6 km to the existing network and provide a direct connection to river transport, aims to reduce dependence on individual transport, thus responding to Portugal’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

“Today we did not launch Metro Sul do Tejo, we started studies and we intend to present these studies in the next three years,” including the cost of the investment, said Miguel Pinto Luz.

According to the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, the government has an integrated vision of a bi-bank city that cannot be developed only on the north bank.

“Now let’s do these studies carefully so that there is no doubt left, so that all political players in the future do not cancel out what today defines a broad consensus,” he explained.
