Mariana Carrillo, 22, was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison for the stabbing death of Nuria Gomes, 19, outside a nightclub in Albufeira. The killer’s boyfriend, José Oliveira, who was tried for concealing the murder weapon and attacking an NSR soldier, was eventually acquitted.
The crime took place early in the morning of April 16 last year. According to the chairman of the panel of judges, it was proven that Mariana brought a knife into the club, hidden under her arm, at the request of her boyfriend. And then he used it, already on the street, to stab Nuria in the chest, which led to her death.
The defendant was charged with aggravated murder, but the judges realized that she should only be found guilty of simple murder, which greatly reduced the sentence.
“This ruling stated that the victim slapped the defendant and that she was defending herself. But this doesn’t make sense, that there is no useless reason, because we don’t defend ourselves from a slap with a knife,” he complained. CM Ana Antunes, a lawyer for the victim’s family, said she was shocked that “the victim is being treated as if she were the accused and the accused as the victim.”
DETAILScompensation
Mariana Carrillo was also ordered to pay Nuria Gomes’ mother 13,000 euros in compensation for moral damages.
The deputy requested 18 years
The prosecutor’s office demanded that Mariana be sentenced to at least 18 years in prison. The judges had a completely different understanding.
drug use
Mariana admitted to using cocaine before the crime. Toxicology tests showed that Nuria had used hashish and MDMA.
