European Council President Charles Michel reminded Hungary’s prime minister on Tuesday that the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) “plays no role in international representation” following Viktor Orban’s controversial trip to Russia.
“The rotating Presidency of the Council does not play any role in representing the Union on the international stage and has not received any mandate from the European Council to act on behalf of the Union. I made this clear even before your visit to Moscow, which took place then. confirmed by the High Representative [para os Negócios Estrangeiros e a Política de Segurança, Josep] Borrell in his statement of July 5,” Michel said in a letter sent to Orban on Tuesday and to which Lusa’s agency had access.
A week after the Hungarian prime minister assured the European Council president that he had travelled to Russia not on behalf of the EU but to learn “first-hand” about Russia’s vision of peace in Ukraine, following the war Russia started in February 2022, Michel wrote to Orban to “make comments and clarify the situation”.
