Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon should resign immediately, 40% of those polled believe and 67% fear that the gender identity law she promotes is a danger to women, writes the Daily Mail newspaper on 13 September. February.
A Panelbase poll of 1,415 voters in Scotland found that 42% of those polled thought the First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) should resign immediately. Less than half (45%) think he should stay in office until the next Scottish election in 2026, with the remaining 13% undecided.
Two-thirds (67%) of those who have a voice say they believe safe spaces for women, such as hospital rooms and locker rooms, will be threatened by the SNP leader’s plan to allow people to determine for themselves its gender.
69% of those polled said they did not know who should be Sturgeon’s successor. Treasury Secretary Kate Forbes was the most popular candidate, but she received just 7% of the vote in the poll.
Other candidates for the post of Prime Minister were his deputy John Swinney (6%) and Minister for Constitutional Affairs Angus Robertson (5%).
SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn and Scottish Environment Minister Myri MacAllan each received 3%.
The current focus on gender issues could alienate voters who are most concerned about their gas bills, suggests Adam Tomkins, a professor of public law at the University of Glasgow and a former Scottish Conservative MP.
“Many people have noticed that this is the only topic of Scottish political conversation for the last month, and it gives the impression that the priorities of the Scottish government are not the priorities of the people.”– he said.
Remember that an earlier Ipsos poll showed that 50% of respondents support the UK government’s decision to block the Gender Bill, which was voted by the Scottish Parliament.
A bill to reform gender recognition passed a majority in the Scottish Parliament in December 2022, but was blocked by the British government.
In this context, there have been a number of scandals in Scotland related to the fact that men convicted of raping women were sent to serve their sentences in women’s prisons, since they came out as transgender.
