U.S. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump should promise American citizens stricter regulations on the sale of firearms, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said at a press conference on July 16 at the National Palace.
The Mexican president commented on the attempted assassination of Trump in Pennsylvania and the involvement of a 20-year-old gunman in the assassination attempt.
“I think gun control in the United States would help a lot. This is something that needs to be done urgently.”“Lopez Obrador said.
Lopez Obrador also said that if the two candidates for the US presidency committed to regulating arms sales, “it would be well received by the Americans.”
Lopez Obrador added that it is necessary to address other causes of gun violence in the US, saying there is a social crisis:
“We need to fight this. They need to get to the bottom of this. They need to get back to the morals of the founders of this great nation. I think that… [эти моральные устои] lost and there is a social crisis.”
He noted that Mexican authorities have seized around 50,000 weapons since late 2018, and stressed that approximately 75% of that figure is smuggled from the United States.
“Gun control [в США] No. If we seize 50 thousand units, imagine how much we get, since we cannot seize everything. (…) And in the United States you can buy it in the supermarket. This cannot continue any longer.” Lopez Obrador said.
He also added that he was glad that nothing bad happened to the former US president as a result of the assassination attempt. López Obrador recalled an episode involving Trump:
“I will never forget that when I got sick with COVID one day, she called me and sent me a package of medicine. … I was already undergoing treatment then, so I transferred her to the Nutrition Institute. (…) I was no longer president then, but she showed that kindness.”said López Obrador, referring to the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition.
Remember that in Mexico, weapons can only be legally purchased in a store owned by the military and located in the metropolitan area of Mexico City. However, most murders in Mexico are committed with firearms illegally imported into Mexico from the United States.
