The question of how cow urine can be used as a substitute for fertilizer is at the heart of the pilot project “Rethinking closed-loop dairy farming” by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature (LVVN) and several non-governmental partner organizations, the Dutch portal Nieuwe Oogst reports on July 16.
A total of 100 dairy farms can participate in the project over a four-year period. The farms must have a special system of barns with “toilets” for the cows. Research is being conducted on how to optimise the use of animal faeces and urine.
The European Union previously agreed that a maximum of 170 kg of nitrogen from animal waste could be applied per hectare. In the Netherlands, they complained that farmers are often forced to do so. “recycling manure with valuable minerals”.When urine is used as a fertilizer substitute, available fertilizers can be used more efficiently, the developers claim.
