Kyiv on Wednesday demanded that Russia take responsibility for the commercial jet with 298 people on board shot down by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, which fired a missile at Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 ten years ago.
“It is inevitable that Russia will respond to this atrocity. All those guilty of this and other Russian crimes will undoubtedly receive the punishment they deserve,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on his account on the X social network.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also condemned Russia for still failing to acknowledge responsibility for the plane crash, as well as for the conviction in absentia in 2022 by Dutch courts of two Russian soldiers and the commander of Russian-speaking separatist forces in eastern Ukraine.
Russia accused the Ukrainian army of shooting down the device and refused to recognize the court decision or extradite the convicted persons.
“In the ten years that have passed since that tragic day, the Russian Federation has not had the courage to admit its responsibility, apologize to the families of the victims and the affected countries, and pay compensation,” the Ukrainian diplomacy said in a statement.
The ministry, headed by Dmitry Kuleba, also criticised Russia for waging a “systematic disinformation campaign aimed at evading responsibility”.
The downing of flight MH17, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, killed all 298 people on board.
