The Disciplinary Council (CD) of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) published on Tuesday the content of the provocations committed by Tondela fans against Jorge Costa, current director of football at FC Porto and then coach of AVS SAD, during a meeting between the two teams in the 34th and final round of the 2nd league of the 2023/24 season.
“During the said game, two spectators, namely Antonio José Ferreira Borges and Tomás Gouveia Ferreira, fans of CD Tondela, South Africa, who were watching the game from the north bench in sector O, a place exclusively occupied by fans of CD Tondela, South Africa, identified with accessories alluding to the club, provoked the defendant Jorge Paulo Costa Almeida by insulting him with the following expressions: “Jorge Costa, you son of a bitch. As a result, the aforementioned fans were identified by the police and taken outside; stadium, the materiality already sanctioned by summary procedure”, can be read in the document published today by the aforementioned organization.
Let us recall that Jorge Costa was initially suspended for 15 days due to disrespect shown in the same meeting. However, this sanction was reduced to 11 days after correction by the Disciplinary Council. The former Avenses coach was also fined 1,340 euros for “damaging honour and reputation and defamatory reporting”.
This decision maintains the impossibility of Jorge Costa being on the bench of FC Porto against Sporting on August 3rd for the Super Cup, knowing in advance that, in light of the new rules, directors cannot carry out suspensions during vacation periods. The penalty will only start to run from the day of the start of the competition in which this particular duel of dragons and lions is involved.
It remains to be noted that Jorge Costa filed an appeal to overturn this punishment and is still awaiting a decision.
