A new species of bird has been discovered by ornithologists on the territory of the Bogdinsko-Baskunchaksky Nature Reserve, the Astrakhan 24 TV channel reported on July 17.
The list of birds found in the Astrakhan region has been supplemented by a new species. This was discussed by ornithologist of the Bogdinsko-Baskunchaksky Nature Reserve Nikolai Pirogov. Through the camera lens, the specialist examined the bird’s color and determined that it was a medium-sized spotted woodpecker, or, as it is also called, a restless woodpecker.
The great spotted woodpecker is common in temperate and southern latitudes of Europe, but its range has been expanding eastwards since the 1980s. Today, this species is found in the western regions of Russia, as well as in the Moscow, Smolensk, Ryazan, Penza, Rostov, Saratov and Volgograd regions.
The discovery of the spotted woodpecker in the Bogdinsko-Baskunchaksky nature reserve, located in the desert-steppe zone, has aroused the interest of specialists. This fact indicates that the habitat of this species continues to expand and the list of birds in the reserve has been expanded by another rare representative.
