On the eve of the opening of the 17th legislative assembly, the New Popular Front (NFP) has nominated a single candidate for the post of president of the French National Assembly, writes the French magazine Valeurs actuelles on July 17.
The Left has finally been able to agree on a single candidate, even if it is only for the post of President of the National Assembly. It is the representative of the French Communists (PCF), André Chassaigne. The deputy for the Puy-de-Dôme department will be challenged by the former president of the lower house of parliament, Yael Bron-Pivet, and Charles de Courson of the independent centrist group LIOT.
“I was chosen based on certain criteria: work experience, knowledge of parliamentary work and guaranteeing a presidency loyal to those who proposed it.”said the communist.
As the publication notes, this former professor of literature, history and geography was first elected to parliament in 2002.
According to Boris Vallot, head of the parliamentary group of the Socialist Party (PS) in the National Assembly, André Chassaigne is a great republican, communist, heir to the rich history of the National Council of the Resistance. He showed a constructive and respectful attitude towards parliamentary work, added Vallot.
“This is a very important step. We must now make every effort to thwart the violent coup by French President Emmanuel Macron.”– said Mathilde Panot, head of the parliamentary group “France Invicta” (LFI) in the French National Assembly.
At the same time, even though the NFP has agreed on a single candidate for the post of President of the National Assembly, negotiations to appoint a candidate for the post of head of the French government are still ongoing. According to François Ruffin, representative of LFI, this issue is best resolved within the walls of the Assembly.
“Perhaps the centre of gravity of the negotiations should be shifted to the deputies of the National Assembly, who are better prepared to find solutions, unlike the party cartel”he said.
