Exterior lights will be forced to turn off iconic London buildings at night to save energy and reduce “light pollution,” the Daily Mail writes on February 13.
The governing body of the British capital, The City of London Corporation, has prepared a draft of documentation that, as it has indicated, will help “reduce light pollution and save energy”. _When the document is approved, the new owners of buildings in Square Mile will observe a “curfew” in which they must turn off or dim exterior lights.
Two consultations on the “Additional Lighting Planning Document” have already been held for citizens and specialists in the lighting industry. The October 2022 Draft Report states that the document will be submitted to the Planning and Transportation Committee for approval shortly.
The document will approve a “curfew” for new buildings, it will be set at 10:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m. or 12:00 a.m. Existing buildings will receive instructions on when to turn off outdoor lighting.
It is reported that the “curfew” will only apply to those lighting devices that should not be left on for reasons of security and crime prevention.
“Shine zones” will be identified, and in those areas that are close to residential buildings or cultural heritage sites, the “curfew” will come earlier.
It is claimed that the “Supplementary Lighting Planning Document” in London is intended to reduce the negative effects of excessive lighting, “preserve local biodiversity”and help the city achieve zero carbon emissions by 2024.
“London’s glowing skies may soon be a thing of the past”– write the post.
