A nine-year-old girl was shot dead in her father’s home in the Brazilian city of Bragança Paulista, in the interior state of Sao Paulo, after she was shot with a gun that fell from a cupboard. When it fell and hit the ground, the gun fired on its own with such failure that it fatally struck the child.
The tragedy occurred when the girl’s mother, who was separated from her husband, took the child to stay with her father for a few days. Since it was quite cold that night, the child’s mother decided to go get another blanket to cover her with, and that’s when it all happened.
When he reached down to grab a blanket from the furniture that he wanted to give to his daughter, it slid off with it, and another slid off where the owner of the house had wrapped the pistol he had inherited from his father as a precaution. He figured that by leaving the old gun hidden in the blanket on top of the closet, there would be no risk of someone finding it and accidentally injuring themselves.
The girl’s father was arrested at the scene of the crime, but when he appeared before a judge the following day, he was released and allowed to remain free to await the death hearing. The civil police (judicial) will conduct activities to clarify and confirm the version put forward by the girl’s father and mother, since there were no other people in the house.
